Qualification of components via Laser Beam Melting (LBM) in aerospace is subject
to a series of procedures, quality gates and tests. Specifications, norms and standards
are indispensable and form the basis for the qualification. An overview of the
most important standards and specifications will be given in the talk.
For more than 15 years, the Ariane Group, in collaboration with corporate partners,
has been developing and testing external companies and institutes for additive
manufactured components for applications e.g. in the field of turbopumps, combustion
chambers and structural components such as e.g. actuator bracket.
As part of the Ariane programme, many components manufactured using Laser Beam
Melting (LBM) will be developed in the launcher sector and will be flight-qualified
with the planned maiden flight of the Ariane 6 in 2020 and industrialized in the years
to come.
In addition to laser melting, other processes such as Wire & Arc Additive Manufacturing
(WAAM), Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) and so-called Cold Gas Spraying
(CGS) for large structures in development and qualification. Copper, steel and
nickel-based
materials (e.g. Inconel 718, Inconel 625, Hastelloy X) are the once
materials chosen for the various applications.
The presentation gives an overview of the challenges and hurdles in the introduction
and qualification of materials and processes and the use of additive-fabricated
components for space propulsion.
